DIY Lacquer Lookalike Boxes

Here's an annoying thing about apartment life: the note on the door.  The irritating note on the door that let's you know that maintenance will be in your apartment sometime.  This apartment complex notifies you of the week they'll enter your apartment rather than our last place which told us the day.

That way, you could plan to be dressed and out of bed when they knocked on your door to invade your apartment. But no... here I've got to expect them to be in my place any time this week.  So... I have to hurry up and get showered and dressed after working out or make sure I'm not in the middle of working out when they arrive.  And if I'm not working out, I have to make sure I have a bra on and am out of my pajamas because, let's face it, I do not look hot after waking up.  There's hair issues and mascara issues and... yeah.

Anyways...

In just about every home decor store that I've been in I've seen these cute lacquer boxes.  And I've wanted one but couldn't bring myself to spend the money for... a box.  And for a box I don't need nor have any where to put it.

Like Target... for $20, too much!

Or these from Amazon.com for a staggering $119.  Who would pay over a hundred dollars for a goofy box?
Then a few days ago I stumbled upon on of my regular websites, Centsational Girl, who recently completed a DIY lacquer box lookalike project.  Using a wooden box from Michael's she made her own inexpensive DIY version of these popular lacquer boxes.

Five dollars later, I was ready to try my hand at making my own!

I took off the hardware and tried to fill the holes with wood glue because I am that cheap and didn't buy wood putty (because... when else would I really use the stuff?).  If the holes were bigger I would have been screwed but after some sanding it worked out fine.  Not perfect but decent.

I wanted to paint the inside a fun color and chose purple because it's my favorite color and I don't use it nearly enough.  I just used some basic acrylic paint on the inside and because the wood soaked it up so easily, I had to do about two to three coats to have it be even.

Per the instructions, I made sure to put masking tape around the lid to keep from painting it shut.  That would have looked no bueno.

I did sand the outside a little bit to make sure it was going to feel and look smooth.

Coat numero uno (don't know why I'm speaking Spanish... must be because I've been working on my Rosetta Stone?).

I put about two more coats on because I wanted a good, even finish.  After an hour or so of drying I taped off where I wanted to paint on my white stripes.  (I can't even type those two words without thinking of the band, weird.)

Make sure to pull the tape off when the paint is still wet so the lines come out straight before drying.

Despite my best efforts, I had some imperfections.

But nothing a little patience and a small paintbrush couldn't fix.

I gave the inside edges a minimal coat of gray paint to give it a more finished look.  And, since it was only one coat I won't have to worry about the paint sticking together when the box closes.

Not bad for an afternoon and $5, right? :D

Baking Win: Awesomely Easy Brownies

Unfortunately those horrible eggless brownies were still leaving a bad taste in my mouth so I decided to make a tried and true good homemade brownie recipe.  I still maintain, however, that the best brownies I've made and eaten have come from a box.  Seriously.

But, if you don't have a mix and don't feel like running to the store, this recipe is a very simple and good alternative.

Easy Brownies

2 c. sugar
1 c. butter
2 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
3/4 c. cocoa
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
dash cinnamon

Mix ingredients and bake in greased pan at 350 for 30-35 minutes.
And that's it.  Really.

Baking Fail: Eggless Brownies

Today is grocery day but we didn't buy groceries today because we walked into Walmart and took one look at the lines and left.  I just couldn't deal with spending my entire night in line at the grocery store when I can live for a few more days at home with the stuff I've already got.

As a result though, I had no eggs and a brownie craving.  I quickly Googled some eggless brownie recipes and found one that had instant coffee in it and thought that would work.

Now... I'm not going to link to the recipe because it wouldn't be cool to link to someone's recipe when I think it is, in fact, terrible.  Like, so terrible I'm going to throw out these brownies and not bat an eye.   So terrible that Russ even says they were bad and he doesn't complain about anything.

But, I have to chronicle the failures as well as the victories so... here goes.

Made my buttermilk with vinegar and milk...

Dissolved my instant coffee...

These look good but... oh wow... they were the absolute worst.  And I'm upset that I wasted any calories on these babies.

Now I'm off to delete my browser history and to toss these out in the garbage where they belong.

Dolla Frames Are Haute

You know what's dumb?  Haute is pronounced "oh-t."  That just seems wrong to me.  I've only read the word and never had the opportunity to pronounce it but now I'm glad I know that for future reference so I don't look like a moron.  I also don't like that word.  It looks fancy but sounds terrible.

Anyways...

I'm always scoping stores for cheap-o frames that I can redo with minimal work and money.  While perusing Big Lots I found these:

Yay!  Dollar frames to be repainted so they can look... haute.  These frames are cheap.  Like... so cheap that it's not even glass in there but whatever.  That's what I was looking for: lightweight, cheap, and ready to be made over!

From the colors in my painting yesterday I realized that these babies were born to be a classy shade of gray.

After one coat of paint, they still weren't living up to their hot potential.

Ahh!  That's better.  Now once I slap some awesome art in there, they won't even look cheapy anymore.  And, I'm totally loving that gray paint.

My wall by the bathroom was just boring me...

I still love the painting that I meticulously copied from Z Gallerie but I'm ready for something fresh.

Enter: my impromptu painting from yesterday...

Plus a few things from The Stash:

And presto!  A new wall design...

I'll share more tomorrow once I figure out what to put in my hot new frames!

Chevrons On The Brain!

I've had this blank canvas around forever and today I finally got some inspiration.  And, it was totally easy and there's basically no way to really screw it up.

Take a blank canvas...

Choose your color palette...

Paint some rough squiggle lines...

Allow the colors to blend and mesh.  Don't worry about it being messy or imperfect because it adds charm that way, don't you think?

And that's it!  The chevron pattern evidently won't leave my brain!

Pinterest Recipe: One-Bowl Chocolate Chip Cookies For Two

Now this isn't a fancy and new recipe or anything today.  This is just your basic chocolate chip cookie but, it's a mini version that makes only four cookies!  "What? Why would someone only need four cookies?" you may ask. Well, if you're a sugar addict and you're afraid that if you make a full batch that in the next twenty-four hours that you're going to devour the entire batch, this recipe is for you!

It's great for Russ and I because even when I halve a recipe we still had too many cookies for the both of us. That's almost why the people in Russ' office get so many baked goodies so I don't end up eating all of them. That and I love baking and hearing about how much they love my stuff.

Anyways, I doubled this recipe to make a few extra cookies to put in Russ' lunch this week (yes, I doubled a mini recipe... I'm goofy). I'm definitely filing this recipe away for later use because it's so convenient.

One-Bowl Chocolate Chip Cookies!
1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon flour
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
A pinch of salt
A pinch of cinnamon
2 tablespoons shortening
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon beaten egg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix together the shortening, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Add the tablespoon of beaten egg and vanilla and mix until combined. Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon and mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Roll dough into four cookie balls and place them on a lightly greased cookie sheet (you can also bake them in two lightly greased tart pans, a muffin top pan, cupcake pan, whatever you desire). Flatten them slightly with your hand.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Peek Into My Sketchbook...

Every once and a while I'll be in the mood to draw, paint or just do some goofy sketches.  Here's a little peek into my doodles and things...

Might do this one on a canvas, it could be fun done in acrylic paints.

Happy Friday, everyone!
